Irish Government grant was key to rescue of Irish centre in London

0
0
The current centre in Hammersmith is to replaced by a HQ with 24 apartments

The situation was once black, but we are able to think about a new future.

Two years ago, dozens of supporters of the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith filled the benches of Hammersmith and Fulham Council, unhappy with plans by the Conservativecontrolled body to sell their home on Blacks Road.

The sell-off plan was part of the council’s bid to balance its books, but an offer from the council to sell the building to the centre filled few with confidence that they could stay in a building that had been their home since 1995.

Visited by presidents and taoisigh, the Irish Cultural Centre has provided much of the cultural heartbeat of the Irish in Britain, from Brendan Mulkere’s fiddle lessons to céilí-dancing classes, and was a meeting place for an older generation of emigrants.

A brighter f uture now dawns. On St Patrick’s Day next year, the curtain will fall on Black’s Road. Soon after, demolition will begin, followed by construction of a glass-fronted headquarters near the busy junction in Hammersmith.

The keys to revival have been a £500,000 grant from the Irish Government, along with a deal between the centre and Shepherds Bush Housing Group, which will take the lease on the 24 apartments to be built on the upper floors of the new building.

Government money
The Government’s money was the key, says the centre’s chairman, Jim O’Hara, who has spent much of the last two years on the rescue bid.
“It really gave a big boost. At that stage we did not have a deal with anybody.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for them to invest over here, but it allowed us to go to other people with credibility. It made it easier for us to do that,” he said, though £250,000 still needs to be raised.

Last week Hammersmith and Fulham Council unanimously granted planning permission for the project, leaving the centre free to buy the freehold over the next few months.

“This is great news for us and also for the Irish community in Britain,” said O’Hara.

Welcoming the planning approval, the chief executive of the Shepherds Bush Housing Group, Paul Doe, said the 24 apartments would “provide much- needed homes for families in the heart of Hammersmith as well as providing a new lease of life” for the centre.

Despite the passions aired against them at that meeting two years ago, Hammersmith and Fulham Council now earn plaudits for the “co-operative spirit i n which t hey have worked with us”, said O’Hara.

Now he must turn his attention to finding the rest of the money.

“I will be going to talk to Irish companies and individuals who have done well here. The situation was once black, but we are now able to think about a new future,” he said.

Quango receiving £5m to promote Gaelic hire outside aid to translate reports

0
0

THE Inverness-based agency have blamed their heavy workload for reason behind their hiring of freelance translation consultants.

A QUANGO being paid £5m a year to promote Gaelic have had to hire outside help to translate it.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig are spending £20,000 on freelance consultants to translate internal reports and press releases into English.

The Inverness-based agency claim their 23 staff, who are bilingual, are too busy to do the work.

Yesterday, Inverness South Highland Council Councillor Jim Crawford said: “This is an absolute waste of money which could be better spent on improving our roads.

“If people want to learn Gaelic I am all for it, but I think it should be vocational rather than forced down our throat.

“The SNP government have turned Gaelic into a bit of a joke, throwing all this money at it to promote it.

“There are more Polish speakers than Gaelic speakers in Inverness.”

The agency, who represent the 60,000 Gaelic language speakers in Scotland, said their aim was to “secure the status of the Gaelic language as an official language of Scotland commanding equal respect to the English language”.

This includes translating press releases, minutes of meetings, website content publications and annual reports.

It is estimated the Bòrd requires to translate about 2000 words per week, excluding Bòrd meetings.”

Alasdair MacKinnon, the quango’s Head of Finance & Corporate Services, said: “Our staff are bilingual but their existing workload is heavy.

“It’s to do with standards as well. We have to make sure all the policy documents we publish are grammatically right and of the highest standard.”

Tory Communities spokesman Alex Johnstone said: “Organisations like this one need to be able to demonstrate responsible use of public funds.

“At £20,000, they seem to be stretching their credibility somewhat.”

Chuir Meitheal Mhaighe (Comharchumann Mhaighe) bróisiúr amach ar na mallaibh a chuireann síos ar imeachtaí agus ar eagraíochtaí sa cheantar.

Tháinig athruithe móra ar Mhagh le déanaí. Tá a lán daoine as baile amach ina gcónaí sa sráidbhaile agus tá sé i bhfad níos mó ná mar a bhí sé. Ní mór pobal nua a chruthú agus tá áiseanna nua de dhíth. Fuair an Comharchumann léas ar Halla Mhuire roinnt blianta ó shin. Cóiríodh an halla.

Tógadh áisionad agus fortheach. Rinneadh seomra breá nua as an spás faoin stáitse. Bronnadh páirc go fláithiúil ar an Chomharchumann agus thosaigh obair ar pháirc shúgartha. Más mian leat a bheith i do thiarna talún, thig leat ‘méadar de Mhagh’ a cheannach le cuidiú leis an tionscnamh seo! Bíonn imeachtaí ar siúl sa halla gach lá den tseachtain beagnach – clubanna do gach aoisghrúpa, grúpa súgartha, biongó, ranganna damhsa, ranganna ríomhaireachta, agus ranganna Gaeilge. Tá sé ar intinn ag an ghrúpa teanga, Glór Mhaighe, ceardlanna a eagrú do dhaltaí scoile agus do thuismitheoirí sa bhliain úr. Bíonn Féile Mhaighe ar siúl gach samhradh agus bíonn an coiste iontach gnóthach i rith na bliana, ag iarraidh an ócáid a fhorbairt. Cosúil le heagraíocht ar bith eile, tá daoine de dhíth ar Mheitheal Mhaighe le cuidiú leis an obair leanúnach. Tá sé an-doiligh daoine a mhealladh amach na laethanta seo mar go bhfuil gach áis sa teach- guthán, teilifís, ríomhaire srl. Ní gá duit dul amach ag siopadóireacht, fiú: tiocfaidh an veain chugat leis an ordú. Is féidir tuilleadh eolais a fháil ar imeachtai sa sráidbhaile ar an suíomh idirlín a sheolfar sa halla anocht: www.muffcommunityforum.ie.

Comhghairdeas le Conradh na Gaeilge, Glaschú, a d’eagraigh dianchúrsaí Gaeilge den scoth sa chathair an deireadh seachtaine seo caite, le teagascóirí as Dún na nGall agus Doire.

Buncrana-born Margaret is Britain’s ‘Hibernian Hero’

Members of the Irish community in Glasgow were delighted when the winner of the Irish Youth Foundation’s Hibernian Hero Award was named in London last week, writes Liam McLaughlin.

The award, sponsored by the Irish Post, the weekly newspaper for the Irish in Britain, went to Margaret Gallagher for her work with Conradh na Gaeilge (the Gaelic League) and in particular, for setting up an Irish language summer camp for young people in conjunction with the IYF.

Margaret was born in Buncrana, but the family moved to Scotland when she was very young. She received all her education in Scotland and did not come in contact with Irish till she was in her teens.

She soon made up for lost time, making rapid progress in learning Irish. She has been interviewed on a number of occasions on Raidió na Gaeltachta. She combines her love of the language with her love of music, and has won numerous prizes at feiseanna.

Margaret sees the award not as a tribute to herself personally, but to all those who contributed to the work of the Gaelic League in Glasgow over the years, including her late husband, Pádraig, from Rann na Feirste, who made an invaluable contribution to the Irish language and Irish culture in the city. Margaret and Pádraig were involved together in other Irish organisations, including Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and Feis Ghlaschú.

Margaret’s entry was backed by Sunderland manager, Martin O’Neill who praised the work of Margaret and the other volunteer workers in the League who keep the Irish heritage alive in Glasgow. An important development has been joint ventures in cooperation with the Scots Gaelic community, including intensive weekend courses in both languages and musical events. Members of the Gaelic League go to Belfast and to the Donegal Gaeltacht regularly to build on the skills learned in Daisy Street.

Cecilia Mc Daid, of Sledrin Glen, Buncrana, is the newly elected Cathaoirleach (Chairperson) of the Glasgow Gaelic League. An accomplished singer, she directs the Gaelic League Singers.

James Clafferty, one of the oldest of the Daisy Street stalwarts, and winner of many feis awards, also hails from Buncrana. It must be something in the water…

President praises youth declaration

0
0
David Berry joined the President and other young people at Aras an Uachtarain for the first of a series of seminars.

Legislation for the X case, a referendum on abortion and a new approach to teaching Irish are among a list of proposals contained in a declaration unveiled yesterday at a presidency seminar for young people.

President Michael D Higgins and 100 young people convened in Áras an Uachtaráin to consider the drafting of the ‘Take Charge of Change’ declaration, the culmination of a six-month nationwide engagement with 700 or so 17 to 26-year-olds.

The process, initiated by President Higgins in May, also resulted in the publication of a report titled Being Young in Ireland 2012. The report formed the basis of yesterday's declaration and reveals concerns about employment, the future of the economy, political reform, citizen participation and education for a full life.

In particular it highlights a desire among young people to see greater equality and a wider acceptance of diversity. It recommends diversity training in schools and calls for the drafting of a constitution which “represents all members of our society regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation”.

The declaration was delivered before President Higgins, Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald and representatives from various State agencies at Áras an Uachtaráin.

It states: “Our vision for Ireland is a secular inclusive, multilingual, confident state with excellent and universally accessible education, health and social support systems; an Ireland of which we can be proud on the global stage; a place where people, arts, culture, heritage, sport and the Irish language are nurtured and developed.

It goes on to outline a vision of community co-operation, active citizenship and a “place where human rights are valued; where there is an acceptance and celebration of all citizens and where all people have equality of access, equality of opportunity in society and in the State.”

Afterwards the President said “any president of any country in the world would be enormously proud of the presentation.” In particular he praised the focus on social justice, education, and the promotion of diversity.

“If anyone is in any doubt now about the myth that’s going around that young people are disengaged, disaffected and cynical, well there is your answer,” he added.

He stressed that it was his wish as President that the proposals get a real, rapid and positive response at every level of politics and within institutions of State. “It must not be a lost conversation, a lost consultation,” he said.

The declaration called on legislators to allow for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender marriage and adoption rights.

The report outlined a belief that young people at home and abroad have a role to play in promoting Ireland and creating a positive image of the country. The declaration urged the government to increase its engagement with the diaspora by extending voting rights to Irish people living abroad.

The young people called for reform of the Leaving Certificate, saying the points system and emphasis on rote learning fails to prepare students for “active citizenship”.

Ms Fitzgerald said the submissions were wonderful, positive and inspiring. “Having your voice heard and bringing about change are not easily achieved,” she added.

She praised the participants for making a positive start in attempting to bring about change and promised to “work with the Government and the President to make sure full attention is given to your findings.”

She said she would study the views with a particular interest in drawing upon them for the young people’s strategy, which is currently being drafted. She said she would also pass on any other relevant proposals to the appropriate authorities.

A summary of the Being Young and Irish Report realesed yesterday afternoon identifies the following themes as being of particular concern to the participants:

Employment, enterprise, social security, concern with the economy : The participants expressed concern about graduate job opportunities and the long-term impact of Ireland’s banking debt. They called for “the economy to be stimulated, with an emphasis on job creation and the need to integrate welfare and social protection more closely with inclusivity, enterprise culture and social solidarity”.

Political reform : A perceived disconnect between young people and politicians needs to be addressed. Respondents felt greater engagement and communication is a responsibility of both young people and politicians.

Education : The emphasis on rote learning in the Leaving Certificate was criticised by many who felt secondary education fails to prepare students for “active citizenship”. The introduction of university fees was unanimously rejected, while there was "an overwhelming sense that access to third level should be free of cost”.

Equality : One of the most prominent submissions. There was a heavy emphasis on the need for respect for individual rights and freedom of expression.

Involve young people : There is a prevailing sense that young people are not being listened to and that, consequently, “many opportunities are missed by those who ignore the youth”. Participants identified a need for a “structured forum where the youth voice can be promoted, encouraged and fostered”.

Being positive : “Young people expressed a strong need for optimism in envisaging an Ireland of the future and a sense of disillusionment with the negativity they experience around them.”

Health : Overall, respondents believe the healthcare system is “wrong”. Submissions on mental health, suicide, and mental health services featured, as did issues of alcohol, smoking and drug use. One participant noted: “Too many people are dying because they aren’t aware of the help that’s there and too often they can’t get the help they need when they look.”

Community and civil society : Young people believe Ireland lost some of its sense of community during the boom years. They believe community spirit can empower individuals and contribute to Ireland’s recover.

Identity as Irish : The economic situation, unemployment and emigration have raised the question of what constitutes Irish identity. Young people said students, graduates and the diaspora had a role to play in promoting Ireland. The need to incorporate the Irish Language into everyday life was also underlined.

Young want secular State and more focus on Irish

0
0

YOUNG people want major reforms of the education system to include a focus on learning Irish, more investment in special education, and extra classes in IT and new technologies.

Equal marriage and adoption rights for gay and transgender couples and the creation of a secular State are also among the rights demanded by 17- to 26- year- olds who took part in an initiative by President Michael D Higgins to help reshape the country.

The ‘ Take Charge of Change’ declaration says that Ireland should become a secular, inclusive and multi- lingual State with excellent education and health systems.

But it says that political reform is needed to bring about the necessary changes.

“Our vision for Ireland is a secular, inclusive, multilingual, confident State with excellent and universally accessible education, health and social support systems; an Ireland of which we can be proud on the global stage,” it says. “We have to engage in a process of systematic political reform.

“Our vision includes economic prosperity, an enterprise culture and the opportunity for education and employment for all, a place where young people reach their potential, have a solid future and a valued voice, free from forced emigration and the burden of national debt.”

It comes after Mr Higgins invited young people last May to take part in a national discussion on how Ireland should develop.
Regional workshops were held in Dublin, Cork, Monaghan and Galway last September.

It resulted in a report called ‘ Being Young and Irish’, which was launched by the president over the weekend.

Myth
“If anyone is in any doubt now about the myth that young people are disengaged, disaffected and cynical, well, there is your answer,” Mr Higgins said.

Concerns about employment, the future of the economy and a belief that university courses should be free have also been identified as major priorities for the 800 people who took part.

Reform of the Leaving Certificate was needed because it emphasised rote learning and failed to prepare students for “active citizenship”.

Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald said the views would be taken into account for the young people’s strategy, which is currently being drafted.

Big increase in Scór na nÓg participation

0

The Donegal county final of Scór na nÓg took place in a packed Glenswilly GAA centre on Saturday 10th November.

This was one of the largest attendances at a Scór county final for many years and is the result of the tremendous work that has been done by the county scór committee under the guidance of Oifigeach Chultúrtha agus Teanga, Con O’Donnell.

This year a total of 23 clubs took part with 242 young people getting the opportunity to display their talent. The final was preceded by three semi finals which took place in Muff, Glenfinn and Rann na Feirste. In addition to this, two clubs, Naomh Mhuire and Muff held their own internal scór competitions.

This augers well for the future of scór in Donegal and hopefully the number of clubs taking part in Scór Sinsir will also increase.

Below is a list of the county champions in the respective categories and these young people will now represent their clubs and county in the Ulster semi final on the 7th December at 8.00pm in Glenswilly where they will compete for the right to go through to the Ulster final. This promises to be another big scór night in Donegal where our county champions will be up against the best that Fermanagh and Tyrone have to offer.

Young people of Ireland declare daring strategy to improve state of the nation

0

Legislation for the X case, a referendum on abortion, and a new approach to teaching Irish are among a list of proposals contained in a declaration unveiled by young people at a presidency seminar on Saturday.

President Michael D Higgins and 100 people aged 17 to 26 convened in Áras an Uachtaráin to consider the drafting of the “Take Charge of Change” declaration, the culmination of a six-month nationwide engagement with more than 700 young people.

The process, initiated by Mr Higgins in May, also resulted in the publication of a report titled Being Young in Ireland 2012. The report formed the basis of Saturday’s declaration and reveals concerns about employment, the future of the economy, political reform, citizen participation and education for a full life.

In particular it highlights a desire among young people to see greater equality and a wider acceptance of diversity in Irish society. It recommends diversity training in schools and calls for the drafting of a Constitution which “represents all members of our society regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation”.

Vision
The declaration was delivered before Mr Higgins, Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald and representatives of various State agencies.

It states: “Our vision for Ireland is [of] a secular, inclusive, multilingual, confident State with excellent and universally accessible education, health and social support systems; an Ireland of which we can be proud on the global stage; a place where people, arts, culture, heritage, sport and the Irish language are nurtured and developed.”

It outlines a vision of community co-operation, active citizenship and a “place where human rights are valued; where there is an acceptance and celebration of all citizens and where all people have equality of access, equality of opportunity in society and in the State”.

Afterwards the President said “any president of any country in the world would be enormously proud of the presentation”. He praised the focus on social justice, education, and the promotion of diversity.

“If anyone is in any doubt now about the myth that’s going around that young people are disengaged, disaffected and cynical, well there is your answer,” he added.

He expressed his wish that the proposals got a real, rapid and positive response at every level of politics and within institutions of State. “It must not be a lost conversation, a lost consultation,” he said.

The wide-ranging declaration called on legislators to extend equal marriage and adoption rights to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. It also urged the Government to increase its engagement with the diaspora by extending voting rights to emigrants.

The young people called for reform of the Leaving Certificate, saying the points system and emphasis on rote learning failed to prepare students for “active citizenship”.

Inspiring

Ms Fitzgerald said the submissions were inspiring. “Having your voice heard and bringing about change are not easily achieved,” she added.

She praised the participants for making a positive start in attempting to bring about change and promised to “work with the Government and the President to make sure full attention is given to your findings”.

She said she would study the views with a particular interest in drawing on them for the young people’s strategy, currently being drafted, and would pass on relevant proposals to the appropriate authorities.

Yesterday youth organisation spunout.iecalled on the Government to take action on the proposals or “risk alienating young people further from the democratic process”.

Declaration main proposals

Adopt a dual approach to teaching Irish at Leaving Certificate level: the first (compulsory) subject focused on speaking, the second (optional) subject focused on literature, driven by foundation of Gaelscoileanna.

Legislate for the X case.

Develop social opportunities for the Irish language.

Make marriage equality and adoption rights a reality.

Legislate for absentee voting for citizens outside of their constituencies and abroad.

Begin a campaign by young people to promote active citizenship.

Provide CAO points recognition for volunteering and community involvement.

Sustain and increase funding to the youth sector.

Reform Leaving Certificate (hands-on class participation) and opportunities for lifelong learning.

Empower local government so our national representatives do not engage in parochial politics.

Provide dedicated classes in primary and post primary schools to educating young people on diversity, tolerance and acceptance.

Provide more funding for special education needs and broaden IT curriculum at second level.

Pursue a secular Irish State.

Reform curriculum at second level to include greater emphasis on political education.

Ina choinne sin, ní shílim go bhfuilimid aon phioc níos gaoismhire tar éis an lae idirnáisiúnta sin seachas mar a bhíomar an mhaidin roimhe sin.

Bhí tráth ann, gan amhras, nuair gurbh í an fhealsúnacht tátal an eolais a bhí lasmuigh ansin ach tosnaíodh de réir a chéile ar thuiscintí eile a scumhadh anuas di. Níl fágtha san fhealsúnacht, dá réir sin, ach nithe nach bhfuil deimhne againn orthu ach nach foláir dúinn dúl sáite iontu mar sin féin.

Dúradh ar leith amháin nach raibh aon fhealsúnacht shonrach Éireannach againn – fág daoine aonair as an áireamh – ach ina choinne sin bhí na seanfhocail againn, cumasc cruinn de ghaois na muintire nach bhfuil a leithéid ar fáil i mball ar bith eile.

Is fíor nach bhfuil stíl faoi leith ag an aigne Éireannach, mar a mhaítear atá ag an aigne Ghearmánach, agus ag an aigne Fhrancach, agus ag an aigne Shasanach.  Ní mian linn dul sna meitifisicí arda, ná go domhain san teibíocht aerach, ná go leamh san eimpíreachas laethúil. Stiall de litríocht tíre ar bith is ea an fhealsúnacht ach an oiread leis an bpíosa filíochta is mó miotaseolaíocht agus leipreachán.

Ní raibh seans ar bith faoin spéir bhraonach go gceapfaí fealsamh eiseach in ollscoil Éireannach leathchéad bliain ó shin, ach an oiread is go gceapfaí léachtóir Tómach in ollscoil Shasanach. Cuid den idé-eolaíocht náisiúnta is ea an fhealsúnacht, rud a fhágann nach bhfuil ceann ar bith againn.

Ní hé nach raibh agus nach bhfuil smaointeoirí Éireannacha abhus againn a chuireann le dioscúrsa an tsaoil mhóir, agus le saibhreas an tsaoil abhus.

B’e Daniel Corkery an chéad chriticeoir iarchóilíneach dá raibh ann, bíodh go mb’fhéidir go dtachtfadh sé ar an lipéad ó shin.  Lenár linn féin tá iarrachtaí suaithinseacha déanta ag Breandán Ó Doibhlin agus ag Deasún Fennell ar an machnamh Éireannach a bhogadh i leataoibh ón oileándacht áitiúil.

Nior fhág sin, áfach, nár fhill an t-aos tráchtaireachta ar na seanfhocail. Tá rud éigin compordach ag baint le seanfhocal. Ní gá a chruthú ná a bhréagnú le fianaise. Is leor do thaithí saoil féin agus nod na haithne. Compord, leis, a mheas gur rud Éireannach faoi leith é agus go bhfuilimid chomh hoilte sa seanfhocal is atáimid sa ghearrscéal agus sa chraic.

Is fíor gurb ann do sheanfhocail againn atá chomh lán de ghaois is atá an turcaí den Nollaig. Sea, sea, is minic gur leag cac bó fear maith, ach is minic nár leag chomh maith céanna.

Mar is é ceann de na miotais dár gcuid ná go bhfuil tuiscint againn i bpóca na muintire nach bhfuil ag an dara cine ar domhan; go díreach is a cheapann Francaigh agus Gearmánaigh go bhfuil ardléirstintí acu siúd toisc go bhfuil scríbhneoirí acu nach dtuigeann a chéile.

Sa mhéid is gur maith liom seanfhocail a léiríonn an saol san fhairsingeacht cheapas go scaoilfinn cúpla ceann as tíortha eile ar fud na gcos. Bain do chiall féin astu:

Ón tSeapáin: “Leigheasann an dochtúir an fear breoite nach bhfaigheann bás.”

Ón Éigipt: “Caitear an duine ámharach isteach sa Níl, agus tiocfaidh sé amach agus iasc ina bhéal.”

Ón Albáin: “In am an ghátair, tabharfar “uncail” ar an muc.”

Ón mBulgáir: “Beir ar uain na féasóige, mar tá sí maol ar a cúl.”

Ón dTúinéis: “Fachtar comhairle ó do bhean chéile, ach déantar a malairt” (ní mise a chum an ceann seo, mise i mbannaí air, lándáiríre píre).

Ón Eastóin: “Tá an ceart ag an mairnéalach, agus tá an ceart ag an bhfeirmeoir.”

Ón tSúdáin: “Iarr comhairle ar dhaoine níos sine ná tú; agus ansin ar dhaoine níos óige. Ina dhiaidh sin, déan do chomhairle féin.”

Ón tSin: “Is ionann cineáltas don iasc agus gaoth san fhásach.”

Ón Rúis: “Fáiltíonn Francach ocrach roimh phréachán.”

Ón Danmhairg: “Is baoth í an bhean a chuireann an milleán ar a cuid cabáiste féin.”

Ón Afganastáin: “Ná cuir lámh id bhás féin go díreach toisc go bhfuil scian óir agat.”

Ón Ungáir: “Ná cuir iontaoibh sa ghiofóig mura bhfuil an tríú súil i gclár a éadain aige.”

Ó Chill Chainnigh: “An té a bhfuil bata mór adhmaid aige, pleancann sé cách.”

Smaoinigh orthu. Ní feall go fealsúnacht. Is í an fhadhb ná a cur i bhfeidhm.

Rófhada ag fanacht le reachtaíocht

Is mithid dlí ciallmhar don ghinmhilleadh, thuaidh agus theas

Tá bean óg marbh, a muintir cráite, foireann chnáimhseachais suaite, faoi néal agus tá mná eile scanraithe. An anachain seo ar fad de cheal soiléire. Fiche bliain ar an méar fhada ag rialtas i ndiaidh rialtais. Caithfear stop a chur leis an tsiléig.

Tharraing bás truamhéalach Savita Halappanavar aird ar an lúb ar lár sa dlí agus sna treoirlínte do dhochtúirí. Ní hé sin an t-aon chúis go bhfuil géarghá le cosaint reachtúil do mhná agus do lucht leighis i dtaca le toircheas contúirteach.

Dúshlán mór é don chomhrialtas ach d’aithin an dá pháirtí ina gclár rialtais go gcaithfí a dhul i ngleic leis. Bhí sé riachtanach ó thaobh dlí gníomhú agus tá tuairisc an ghrúpa saineolaithe ag an Rialtas le seachtain chun cuidiú leo é sin a dhéanamh. Sa mullach air sin chothaigh bás Savita riachtanas polaitiúil; dá ndéanfaí neamhaird de bheadh an rialtas náirithe sa bhaile agus i gcéin.

Níl na fíorais ar eolas fós faoin gcóir leighis a fuair Savita in Ospidéal na hOllscoile, Gaillimh. Níl a fhios cén fáth nár deineadh idirghabháil chun an bhreith anabaí a spreagadh, mar a d’iarr sí nuair ba léir nach mairfeadh an ghin.

Níl a fhios cén uair a thuig an fhoireann go raibh sí i mbaol báis. Níl a fhios ach an oiread cén uair a bhuail an tseipsis í nó an bhfuair sí cógaisí antaibheathacha in am tráth. Beidh an fiosrú neamhspleách ag scrúdú na gceisteanna sin agus go leor eile.

Tá a fhios againn, áfach, go bhféadfadh tubaist den tsórt seo tarlú do bhean torrach ar bith. Tá a fhios againn chomh maith go bhfuil lucht leighis éiginnte faoi na cúinsí ina dtig leo idirghabháil a dhéanamh.

Is fada cnáimhseoirí ag tabhairt rabhaidh faoin éiginnteacht sin; tá sé ráite acu go minic le seachtain anuas ach dúradar é le lucht athbhreithnithe an Bhunreachta i bhfad roimhe seo.

Liosta le háireamh iad na daoine eile a dúirt nár mhór do Rialtas na hÉireann a dhul i ngleic leis an doiléire, ina measc an Chúirt Uachtarach agus an Chúirt Eorpach.

Dúirt urlabhraithe ó ghrúpaí ar son na mbeo gan bhreith gur thubaiste a bhain le cúram leighis é bás Savita. Dúirt siad go raibh treoirlínte Chomhairle na nDochtúirí soiléir agus leordhóthanach agus go ndéantar idirghabháil go minic in ospidéil na tíre chun beatha na mná a shábháil má bhíonn sí i mbaol ó bhreith anabaí. (Ní ghlaoitear foirceannadh toirchis nó ginmhilleadh míochaine air sin in Éirinn murab ionann agus tíortha eile.)

Ag tochras ar a gceirtlín féin a bhí na hurlabhraithe; iad ag géarú ar a bhfeachtas in aghaidh an ghinmhillte i gcás ar bith. Níl a fhios acusan, ach an oiread liomsa, cad iad na fíorais.

Bhíodar ar a ndícheall arís ag iarraidh a chur ina luí ar an Rialtas go raibh gluaiseacht na rogha á mbrú chun ginmhilleadh a cheadú go forleathan – beart nár chualas-sa aon eagraíocht ag éileamh.

I dTuaisceart Éireann léiríonn staidreamh oifigiúil go ndéantar thart ar thrí scór go leith ginmhilleadh míochaine in aghaidh na bliana.  Tá athrangú á dhéanamh ar na figiúirí faoi láthair ach is é 70+ an bunlíon. Ach an oiread leis an Deisceart tá doiléire chonspóideach maidir leis an dlí sa Tuaisceart.

Ní reachtaíocht ach cásdlí atá i bhfeidhm. Ceadaíonn sin foirceannadh toirchis má bhíonn beatha nó sláinte na máthar i mbaol agus bíonn imní ar fhoirne leighis go gcuirfeadh an stát nó díograiseoir an dlí orthu.

Tá an eagraíocht Pleanáil Clainne le fada ag iarraidh iachall a chur ar airí treoirlínte a fhoilsiú chun cnáimhseoirí agus mná a chosaint. Dúirt ionadaí Choláiste Ríoga na mBan Cabhrach go raibh siadsan ag éileamh treoirlínte ó 2004 i leith.

Deirtear gur theip ar na páirtithe sa bhfeidhmeannas i Stormont a theacht ar réiteach faoi threoirlínte. Ag deireadh na seachtaine seo thart dúirt an t-aire sláinte, Edwin Poots (DUP), go raibh sé meáite go bhfoilseodh sé treoirlínte. Ach cathain?

Nuair a bheidh siad sáthach láidir nach féidir a ndúshlán a thabhairt sna cúirteanna, arsa an roinn. Lá éigin, mar sin.

Is furast a thuiscint go bhfuil deacrachtaí polaitiúla ag baint leis an gceist achrannach seo ar dhá thaobh na Teorann.Tá gach páirtí in éadan ginmhilleadh “ar éileamh” agus aontaíonn formhór an phobail ar dhá thaobh na Teorann leo. Tá daoine sa Rialtas i mBaile Átha Cliath agus sa bhfeidhmeannas i mBéal Feirste a thugann diúltú coinsiasach do ghinmhilleadh i ngach cás, nach mór.Sin é a gceart agus sin rogha phearsanta dá saol féin.

Ní bhíonn siad chomh lomtheagascach sin nuair a cheistíonn tú iad faoi choinníollacha a bhaineann le bás nó sláinte na máthar. Is chuige sin atá reachtaíocht, nó treoirlínte dochta, riachtanach. Tá alltacht ar dhaoine faoin tsiléig. Tá gníomh dlite do shaoránaigh. Is mall agus is mithid.

Comóradh le déanamh ar fhear Gaeltachta a crochadh go héagórach

0
0

Go moch ar maidin an 15ú Nollag 1882 fuair gobharnóir phríosún na Gaillimhe teileagram ón Iarla Spencer, Fear Ionaid na Banríona agus Tiarna Leifteanant na hÉireann.

Go gairid roimhe sin, bhí an bheirt eile a bhí le crochadh in éineacht le Seoighe tar éis ráitis scríofa a thabhairt ag admháil go raibh siad ciontach as dúnmharaithe Mhám Trasna ach go raibh Maolra Seoighe neamhchiontach.

Neamhaird ar fhianaise

“The law must take its course,” a scríobh an tIarla mar mhíniú gonta ar a chinneadh neamhaird a dhéanamh ar an bhfianaise nua.

Ag 8.15 an mhaidin chéanna crochadh Seoighe as a bheith páirteach i ndúnmharú teaghlaigh ceithre mhí roimhe sin i Mám Trasna ar theorainn na Gaillimhe agus Mhaigh Eo.  Ar an 15ú lá don mhí seo chugainn, eagróidh Oifig an Choimisinéara Teanga, Músaeum Cathrach na Gaillimhe agus Conradh na Gaeilge ócáid chomórtha i gcuimhne Sheoighe in iarracht eile aird a tharraingt ar a chás truamhéalach.

Beidh an ócáid sa Ghaillimh mar thaca leis an iarracht atá ar bun ag roinnt ball de Thithe na Parlaiminte sa Bhreatain chun tabhairt ar na húdaráis ansin a fhógairt gur go héagórach a ciontaíodh Maolra Seoighe.

Beidh duine de cheannairí an fheachtais sin, an Tiarna Acton as Learpholl, i láthair ag an ócáid chomórtha sa Ghaillimh an mhí seo chugainn. In imeacht na mblianta tháinig tuilleadh fianaise chun solais faoin éagóir a deineadh ar Sheoighe. Deineadh neamhaird dá fhianaise i nGaeilge, coimeádadh siar fianaise thábhachtach ón gcúirt agus thug brathadóirí fianaise bhréige ina choinne.

Cime gan Béarla ar bith

Fear Gaeltachta ab ea Seoighe nach raibh aon Bhéarla aige agus ní raibh aon Ghaeilge ag an dlíodóir a bhí á chosaint.  Ní raibh Gaeilge ach an oiread ag an mbreitheamh ná ag baill an ghiúiré a chaith níos lú ná sé nóiméad i mbun machnaimh ar an scéal sara dtáinig siad ar chinneadh go raibh sé ciontach.

Agus eolas faoi ócáid chomórtha na míosa seo chugainn á fhógairt sa Ghaillimh inné, dúirt an Coimisinéir Teanga, Seán Ó Cuirreáin, nár cheart cás Sheoighe a scaoileadh chun dearmaid.

“Tráth a bhfuil cearta teanga an phobail daingnithe le dlí anois, níor cheart dearmad a dhéanamh ar chásanna cosúil le cás Mhaolra Seoighe, a léirigh gur dheacair cothrom na Féinne a fháil an uair sin faoin dlí gan Bhéarla,” a dúirt Ó Cuirreáin.

Crochadh agus cuireadh Maolra Seoighe ar láthair phríosún na Gaillimhe san áit a bhfuil Ardeaglais na Gaillimhe anois.

Mar chuid den chomóradh an mhí seo chugainn leagfar bláthfhleasca ar an áit ar crochadh é agus beidh Aifreann ina chuimhne san Ardeaglais féin.  Ina dhiaidh sin reachtáilfear siompóisiam i Músaem na Cathrach.

I measc na gcainteoirí ann, beidh Johnny Joyce, duine de shliocht na Seoigheach a dúnmharaíodh i Mám Trasna ar 17ú Lúnasa 1882.  Fógrófar tuilleadh imeachtaí sna seachtainí amach romhainn.

Fathaigh na staire

Bhí cás brónach Mhám Trasna ina scéal mór náisiúnta agus idirnáisiúnta.

Phléigh cuid d’fhathaigh na staire an scéal i bparlaimint Westminster, ina measc Charles Stewart Parnell.  Nuair a diúltaíodh d’fhiosrúchán poiblí ar an gcás thaobhaigh Parnell agus na teachtaí Éireannacha leis na Tóraithe i Westmister a bhí faoi cheannas Randolph Churchill.

An “Maamtrasna Alliance” a tugadh ar an socrú sin agus tá an chomhghuaillíocht luaite i measc na gcúiseanna ar thit rialtas Liobrálach William Gladstone in 1885.

Tá lucht eagraithe na hócáide i gcuimhne Mhaolra Seoighe ag súil le haird an phobail a tharraingt arís an mhí seo chugainn ar chás a rinne an staraí iomráiteach Robert Kee cur síos air mar “one of the most blatant miscarriages of justice in British legal history”.

Comhaltaí nua bhord UnaG

0
0

Tá Anna Ní Ghallchóir, Stiúrthóir Ionad na dTeangacha ar Ollscoil na hÉireann, Má Nuad, ceaptha ina cathaoirleach ar bhord nua Údarás na Gaeltachta, a scríobhann Seán Tadhg Ó Gairbhí.

D’fhógair Aire Stáit na Gaeltachta, Dinny McGinley, inné go raibh Ní Ghallachóir agus seisear eile ceaptha ar an mbord. Léiriú is ea ceapachán Ní Ghallachóir ar an ról nua atá ag Údarás na Gaeltachta maidir leis an bpleanáil teanga. Beirt iarchomhaltaí ar bhord an údaráis a cheap an tAire Stáit – Fiachra Ó Céilleachair ó Phort Láirge agus Micheál Ó Scanaill ó Chorcaigh.

Cheap sé chomh maith Seán Ó Cuireán ón bhFál Carrach, dlíodóir agus bainisteoir ar ionad saorálaí Dhún na nGall; Eunan Mac Cuinneagáin, Bainisteoir Réigiúnach ar WESTBIC i gCill Charthaigh; Dairíona Nic an Iomaire, príomhoide ar Ghaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh i gCnoc na Cathrach, Gaillimh agus Pádraig Ó hAinifín fear gnó ón nDaingean, Co Chiarraí.

Tá ceathrar eile ainmnithe ar an mbord nua cheana ag na comhairlí contae Gaeltachta. Ní dhaingneofar ainmniúchán Chomhairle Contae Dhún na nGall go dtí go gcríochnófar próiseas fiosrúcháin.

Tús sa Taibhdhearc

Agus a bhfuil de chaint déanta faoi “ré nua na Taibhdheirce” b’ait an cinneadh é scéaldráma a roghnú mar chéad mhórléiriú agus í ag oscailt den chéad uair ó chuaigh sí trí thine cúig bliana ó shin, a scríobhann Seán Tadhg Ó Gairbhí.

Bhain corráiste ar leith leis an scéal toisc an scéaldráma sin, Scorach le Páraic Breathnach, a bheith lonnaithe in “aimsir an drochshaoil i gConamara”. (Chonac cheana thú, fé mar a dúirt an cat leis an mbainne te.)

Ba lag an ráiteas físe a bhí ann ag an tsean-amharclann nua. Spreag Scorach ceisteanna suimiúla faoin gcoimhlint idir fírinní an bhéaloidis agus fíricí na staire ach níor éirigh leis an siar agus aniar, idir throm agus éadrom, agus ba chosúil le cabaret Gaelach ar uaireanta é.

Sa réamhléiriú ba i dtreo dheireadh an dráma ba mhó a bhí samhlaíocht an stiúrthóra – Breathnach féin – le feiscint agus ba sna nóiméid deireanacha sin is mó a d’aimsigh Scorach an ton ceart.

Faraor, bhí an iomarca den “An Gorta Mór – an ceoldráma!” ag baint leis an méid a chuaigh roimhe. Bhí dóthain fuinnimh ag baint le gnéithe den léiriú agus dóthain téagair i gcuid den aisteoireacht chun dóchas a thabhairt agus sinn ag fanacht le fógra ceart ar an “ré nua”.

An scríbhneoir agus colúnaí Alan Titley faoi agallamh

Beidh An Siopa Leabhar i mbun oíche chomhluadair agus chuideachta leis an údar aitheanta, Alan Titley.

Cuirfidh an craoltóir cáiliúil litríochta ó RnaG, Cathal Pórtéir, duine de scríbhneoirí móra na teanga faoi agallamh sa Siopa Leabhar, Sráid Fhearchair, Baile Átha Cliath, san oíche amárach ag 8.30pm.

Agallamh faoi shaol agus faoi shaothar Titley atá i gceist leis an ócáid seo, caint a thabharfaidh léargas don phobal ar chur chuige agus ar mheon an scríbhneora.

Ag deireadh an agallaimh seo seolfar an scéal spleodrach nua dá chuid do pháistí, Smuf, saol madaidh nach saol an mhadaidh bháin é. Tá an t-agallamh le craoladh ar Raidió na Life amach anseo agus cuirtear fáilte roimh chách.

Gaeilge chun tosaigh i bhforógra na nÓg

0

Tháinig dha mholadh ar son na Gaeilge go láidir ag seimineár ‘An Óige agus an t-Éireannachas’ ag am deireadh seachtaine inár pléadh fís na tíre.

Roghnaigh na hionadaithe óga 15 mholadh le dul isteach sa fhorógra dar teideal “Glac seilbh ar athrú” agus cuireadh iad faoi bhráid an Uachtaráin Micheál D. Ó hUigínn agus Aire na bpáistí, Frances Fitzgerald.

“Is iontach an rud é gur tháinig an Ghaeilge chun cinn go mór i measc na n-óg. Is teachtaireacht láidir í do pholaiteoirí na tíre,” arsa Paula Melvin, a bhí mar bhean an tí ar an ócáid.

Is ábhar suntais é gur bhain an moladh leis an nGaeilge an méid is mó vótaí amach ar son athraithe i dteagasc na Gaeilge.

Moladh go nglacfaí cur chuige athnuaite i dtaca le múineadh na Gaeilge ar leibhéal na hArdteistiméireachta; ábhar (éigeantacht) a dhíríonn ar labhairt na teanga an chéad chuid agus ábhar (roghnach) a dhíríonn ar litríocht na Gaeilge an dara cuid, a mbeidh Gaelscoileanna mar bhonn leo. Dhírigh an tríú moladh is mó a fuair vótaí leis an bhforbairt ar dheiseanna sóisialta a bhaineann leis an nGaeilge.

“Tá muid ag iarraidh go rachaidh ceannairí na tíre seo i gcomhar linne chun ár bhfís don tír a bhaint amach agus táimid ag coimeád súil ghéar amach do fhreagra an rialtais ar an dearbhú seo,” arsa Paula.

I measc na molta i dtaobh reachtaíochta a bhaineann le ginmhilleadh agus an ‘X-case’, sochaí ilchineálach a chur chun cinn, agus comhionannas i dtaca le pósadh agus le huchtú.

Toradh is ea an forógra seo ar shraith ceardlanna agus seimineár a eagraíodh ó thús mhí na Bealtaine seo caite, tiomanta ag an Uachtarán Micheál D. Ó hUigínn, ag a raibh 800 ionadaí óg i láthair as achan cearn den tír.

Lords seek to declare execution of Mammatrasna murder accused a miscarriage of justice

Two members of the British House of Lords are seeking to have the British authorities declare that the hanging of a County Galwayman 130 years ago a miscarriage of justice.

David Alton, Baron Alton of Liverpool, and Eric Lubbock, the fourth Baron Avebury are seeking a review of the case of Myles Joyce, alleged to have been involved in the Maamtrasna murders, and for the authorities to declare him the victim of a miscarriage of justice and to concede he was falsely convicted and executed.

The Maamtrasna Murders took place on August 17 1882 when a family of five were slaughtered in their mountainside cottage in the Lough Mask area on the Galway/Mayo border.

Ten men from the surrounding area were arrested and charged, and three - Pat Joyce, Pat Pádraig Shéamuis Casey, and Myles Joyce were found guilty and sentenced to death. Another five were sentenced to penal servitude. The three were brought back to Galway Gaol where, shortly before they were hanged, Pat Joyce and Pat Casey admitted separately that they were guilty but that Myles was innocent. However the hangings went ahead on December 15 1882 and their bodies were buried in the grounds of the prison, in what is now the Cathedral carpark.

However the reliability of the trial, much of the evidence given, and the trustworthiness of some of the witnesses has since been called into serious question, leading to the current efforts of the two British lords.

A monoglot Irish speaker, Myles Joyce, who had no English, was defended in court in Dublin by a solicitor and barristers who spoke no Irish. The evidence he gave as Gaeilge was ignored in court. Evidence which might have helped his defence was withheld and the trial also heard from informers gave false evidence against him. The judge and jury who convicted him had no Irish and the jury deliberated for less than six minutes to decide on his guilt before sentence of death was passed.

The case of Myles Joyce and the efforts to clear his name will be the subject of a series of events to take place in Galway on Saturday December 15. The events are being organised by the Office of An Coimisinéir Teanga, the Galway City Museum, and Conradh na Gaeilge.  The events begin with a Mass as Gaeilge in memory of Mr Joyce in the Galway Cathedral followed by the laying of wreaths on the spot where the gallows on which he was hanged stood.

A symposium in the Galway City Museum will hear contributions from historian NUI Galway’s Prof Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh and Lord Alton, whose mother came from the Tuar Mhic Éadaigh Gaeltacht bordering Maamtrasna. There will also be a contribution from Johnny Joyce from Dublin, a descendant of the Joyce family whose murder in Maamtrasna led to the conviction of Myles Joyce.

An exhibition, readings from historical material, and an RTÉ film about the Maamtrasna murders will also feature. Further elements of the event are to be announced later.
An Coimisinéir Teanga, Seán Ó Cuirreáin, said Mr Joyce’s case was one of most significant and distressing cases ever concerning the denial of language rights.

“At a time when the public’s language rights are confirmed in law,” he said, “we shouldn’t forget cases such as that of Myles Joyce which remind us of the difficulty of getting justice under the law in the past if you didn’t have English.”

He pointed out that Mr Joyce’s final words before being hanged were: Feicfidh mé Íosa Críost ar ball – crochadh eisean san éagóir freisin” - I will soon see Jesus Christ - he too was hanged unjustly.

“What happened to Myles Joyce is part of the history of the city, the county and the country,” said Breandán Ó hEaghra of the Galway City Museum. “Like any museum, we have an important role to play in presenting that history to the current generation and conserving these memories for future generations.”

Conradh na Gaeilge’s Peadar Mac Fhlannchadha said the case was both significant in contemporary British/Irish politics, and involved a number of possible miscarriages of justice.  “This Gaeltacht case led to a furious debate which raged for many years in Westminster,” he said. “It was one of the reasons William Gladstone’s Liberal government fell in 1885 when Irish MPs under Charles Stewart Parnell withdrew support and sided with the opposition Tories under the leadership of Randolph Churchill.”

He also pointed out that of the five others sentenced to penal servitude for life, two of those died in prison, and four of those prisoners were also believed to be innocent. In 1902 the three surviving prisoners - two brothers and a nephew of Myles Joyce - were freed having spent 20 years in gaol. Official records portray them as convicted murderers.

Glórtha na mban le clos ag Éigse Dhiarmuidín

I mbliana tá blaise banda curtha le hÉigse Dhiarmuid Uí Shúilleabháin, a bheidh ar siúl i mBaile Mhúirne agus Cúil Aodha idir an 30ú Samhain agus 2ú Nollaig.

Bhí an t-iriseoir agus amhránaí sean-nóis chlúiteach Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin, a cailleadh sa bhliain 1991 agus a tionóltar an Éigse ina chuimhne gach bliain, ar cheann de bhaill luatha Chór Chúil Aodha faoi stiúir Sheán Uí Riada.

Gach bliain canann an cór, atá ag ceiliúradh 50 bliain ar an bhfód i 2013, mar chuid d’Éigse Dhiarmuid Uí Shúilleabháin, ach i mbliana don chéad uair riamh i dteannta leo sa cheolchoirm, a bhíonn ar cheann de bhuaicphointí an deireadh seachtaine, beidh a gcontrapháirteanna baineanna ó Chór Ban Chúil Aodha.

Bhunaíodh an cór ban sa bhliain 1985 faoi stiúir mac an Riadaigh, Peadar, a chum an dá mhór-shaothar dá chuid, Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoighre agus Laoi na Laoithe, iad araon scaoilte ag an gcór ar dhlúthdhiosca.

Tá a stór saothar leathnaithe anois ag an gcór ban le hamhráin traidisiúnta, a chuirfear i láthair ag an gceolchoirm ar an Satharn, 1ú Nollaig.

Tá Eilís Ní Shúilleabháin, deirfiúir Dhiarmuid agus ball de Chór Ban Chúil Aodha, ar dhuine de lucht eagraithe na hÉigse chomh maith.

“Ar fhéachaint trí líosta an cheolchoirm dom thugas faoi deara go raibh go leor fearaibh ann agus gan ach fíorbheagán mná,” a dúirt sí.

“Go dtí seo bhí na saothair a mbíodh á gcur i láthair ag Cór Ban Chúil Aodha fíor-fhada ach anois tá amhráin áitiúla curtha againn leo, mar shampla Táimse ’s Máire, chomh maith le Mná na hÉireann, ceann de shaothair Sheáin Uí Riada féin, atá níos oiriúnaí do chur i láthair níos giorra, mar sin don chéad uair riamh beidh Cór Ban Chúil Aodha mar chuid den cheolchoirm.”

I dteannta leo sa cheolchoirm in Áras Éamon Mac Suibhne, Cúil Aodha, beidh Jimí Ó Ceannabháin, Ciarán Ó Gealbháin, Len Graham, Jimmy Crowley, John Kelly, Éamon McGivney agus buaiteoir Gradam Saoil TG4 2012 Danny Meehan.

Lena chois sin beidh amhránaithe, ceoltóirí agus rinceoirí a bheidh mar theagascóirí na gceardlann, á reáchtáil maidin Dé Sathairn: Caitlín Nic Gabhann (consairtín), Caoimhín Ó Fearghaíl (píob uileann), John Wynne (feadóg mhór), John McEvoy (fidil), Damien Mullane (bosca ceoil), Mick Mulkerrin (rince sean-nóis), Séamus Mac Mathúna (bailéidí Béarla), Steve Cooney (giotár).

Ag tabhairt ceardlann san amhránaíocht ar an sean nós, ar chinnte gur mór an éileamh a bheidh uirthi, beidh buaiteoir Amhránaí na Bliana TG4 2012 Nell Ní Chróinín ó Bhéal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh.

Chomh maith le céilithe agus seisiúin cheoil agus amhrán, beidh léacht le staraí Chúil Aodha Dónal Ó hÉalaithe faoi Gobnait Naofa Bhaile Mhúirne, agus seisiún filíochta agus amhrán le Con Fada Ó Drisceoil, i gcuimhne Dheagláin Ó Tallúin, a cailleadh 10 mbliana ó shin.

Beidh an ócáid sin ar siúl sa ‘Kerry Way’ tigh tábhairne i gCorra Glasa – ionaid nua don Éigse, a chaill ceann dá hionaid thraidisiúnta nuair a scriosadh Barr a’ Chuma le tine i mí na Bealtaine i mbliana.

Eolas faoi Éigse Dhiarmuid Uí Shúilleabháin ag 026 45236 nó 087 2841220.

Record numbers go on to third level

0

Private fee-paying schools, Gaelscoileanna and State schools in more prosperous areas are doing especially well, but the picture elsewhere is not as rosy

One of the striking features of the list is the strong performance of schools in Leitrim and Sligo, where virtually all schools have a 100 per cent progression rate to third-level.

An increasing number of Leaving Certificate students are proceeding to third- level education, according to the 2012 School League Tables. A decade ago, when The Irish Times first published these lists, the average progression rate was about 70 per cent; today most schools send about 80 per cent of their students on to third-level institutions.

The picture is very mixed, however. Three types of school tend to perform well in the league tables. These are private feepaying schools, Gaelscoileanna and State schools in more prosperous areas. The picture is much bleaker when you look at schools in disadvantaged areas, where progression rates of less than 60 per cent are not uncommon.

The picture is striking in Dublin. Belvedere College, the Jesuit secondary school near Parnell Square, has a progression rate of 100 per cent, but three other schools in the area, including O’Connell’s Christian Brothers school, have transfer rates of less than 60 per cent. Some schools in west Dublin have progression rates of as low as 30 per cent.

In Dublin, private fee-paying schools top the league tables in most postal districts. Many have a progression rate of 100 per cent, including Loreto Abbey in Dalkey; St Andrew’s College in Booterstown; Catholic University School on Leeson Street; Gonzaga College, in Ranelagh; the Teresian School, in Donnybrook; and Blackrock College.

That said, many non fee-paying schools in Dublin perform exceptionally well. These include Muckross Park College, in Donnybrook; St Benildus College, in Stillorgan; and Holy Faith Secondary School, in Clontarf.

Broadly, schools in south Dublin tend to perform better than their counterparts in north Dublin.

Galelscoileanna also feature strongly in the lists. Coláiste Íosagáin and Coláiste Eoin, which share a campus in Stillorgan, in south Co Dublin, both achieve a 100 per cent progression rate.

Outside Dublin, two Gaelscoileanna in Galway city both achieve 100 per cent transfer rates. Gaelscoileanna in Cork, Mayo and Carlow are among several others that also do well.

One of the striking features of the list is the strong performance of schools in Leitrim and Sligo, where virtually all schools have a 100 per cent progression rate. Sligo Institute of Technology appears to be doing well in attracting local students.

In Cork there is a mixed picture. Christian Brothers College on Sidney Hill, Scoil Mhuire Secondary School on Sidney Place and Presentation Brothers College in Mardyke are among the private schools that do well. Overall, 14 schools in the county have a 100 per cent progression rate. These include several non fee-paying schools, including Sacred Heart Secondary School in Clonakilty, St Francis College in Rochestown and Mount Mercy College.

The performance of schools in Co Mayo is also eye-catching. No fewer than 16 schools in the county register a progression rate of 100 per cent. In all, 24 or 26 schools in the county have a progression rate of more than 80 cent. This is all the more remarkable when one considers that Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology is the only major third-level college in the county.

Co Roscommon also does well. Six of the eight schools in the county have progression rates of 100 per cent, despite the absence of a local third-level college.

Overall, this year’s league tables show a rising tide. More and more students are progressing to third level.

And record numbers of schools are showing a progression rate of 100 per cent.
